Memorial: St Dingats Church, Llandovery, Carmarthenshire

Notes: Dorothea and her sister Nest were daughters of Margaret Pryse Rice, President of the Carmarthenshire Red Cross. Dorothea’s record card has not survived, but she probably served as a VAD most of the war. She married a war hero, Brigadier-General Lewis Pugh Evans VC, in October 1918, had a son in 1920, and died of influenza aged in 1921 aged 27.

Notes: Nest and her sister Dorothea were daughters of Margaret Pryse-Rice, President of the Carmarthenshire Red Cross. She served through the whole war, mostly at the Llandovery Auxiliary Hospital but 1918 - 1919 at the Nannau Hospital for Officers, Dolgellau. She died aged 25

Notes: Catherine was a member of the St John’s Ambulance. She served throughout the War, first in Porthcawl and then in Stebonheath, Llanelli (where she may have contracted the TB that killed her aged 28.) Her name appears on the war memorial plaque in Tabernacl Chapel, Llanelli.

Amy Curtis (née Chamberlain)

Service: Nurse, VAD, July – November 1918 / Gorff

Death: 1918/11/06, Auxiliary Hospital Wallasey, Pneumonia / Niwmonia

Memorial: Gwersyllt, Denbighshire

Notes: Amy’s father was a railwayman who moved the family around the English midlands before setting in Gwersyllt. She married James Chamberlain in 1909 and had a daughter Lilly in 1910. James was killed in action in December 1917, and Amy joined the VAD in July 1918. She was 31 when she died; her name appears in the Welsh Book of Remembrance.

Notes: Ethel, aged one, died when a souvenir shell brought home by her uncle exploded, killing her and fatally injuring her sister and two cousins. Her uncle Private John Bagnall was seriously injured as well as her mother Sarah Roberts and her aunt Mary Bagnall. The children were buried in two graves in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Gwersyllt, where a memorial to the four girls was dedicated in March 2016.
