Janet Elizabeth Evans

Notes: Janet became a teacher but later left to join the Army Pay Corps in Chester. In the summer of 1918 she joined the clerical staff of the QMAAC and was stationed in London. Following a period of indifferent health she was admitted to a London military hospital in April 1919. She died a month later, aged 21.

Notes: Maggie Evans volunteered part-time for the VAD until 1917, when she was posted to the RC Hospital Porthmadoc, and then in 1918 to the Royal Naval Hospital, Plymouth where she died. A letter about Maggie’s death from Mildred Lloyd Hughes [qv] the Sister in charge was published in Yr Udgorn 7th August 1918 (in English).

Notes: Mary Evans was the sister of the poet Hedd Wyn, Ellis Humphrey Evans. She was studying at Madryn Agricultural College, near Pwllheli. This letter, written in Autumn 1917, asks for money, talks about her life, and expresses hiraeth for her late brother.

Notes: Mary Evans was a professional masseuse who volunteered for the VAD in four Red Cross Hospitals. Her health broke down in 1918, and she herself was admitted to hospital. Her practice was taken over by Mr and Mrs Walton in 1919.
